At the end of last May we reported on the effort of Borderlands content creator and modder EpicNNG’s attempt to rebuild a Chinese MMO version of the shooter, as he’s chronicled his journey to track down the game’s original files, discussed the issues he’s run in to, and ultimately put out a call for help with the project. According to an interview with Eurogamer, that call for help has been very readily answered, as he says nearly 100 gamers have stepped forward after his video was premiered.
“Since I came out with this news, I have had nearly 100 people reach out through various methods to let me know they’ll be working on this project,” EpicNNG says. “It’s a feeling I can’t even describe. I even had people who have never played a Borderlands game before become interested in this project. In a way, it’s growing the franchise to an extent.”
As for when this MMO will be playable, EpicNNG provides no timeline but expresses his hope that it will be functioning at some point before July – whether through his own efforts or those of others hoping to preserve the title. “I cannot speak for the progress of other teams however, since I have no idea where they’re at with their efforts. Maybe they’ll beat me to it? I look forward to seeing it,” he says.
The interview otherwise covers the process that EpicNNG followed to get to this point and once more reaffirms his focus is about preserving the game, not necessarily to play a good title; he goes so far as to suggest that it’s indeed a bad game, but the point is to be able to play it with friends, archive the shooter, and ideally bring people together.
