Helldivers 2 adds new Illuminate enemies, weapon customization, and a cash shop update in today’s patch

There’s a big stonking patch for fans of the co-op shooter Helldivers 2 today, and there’s just one word to describe it: squidtastic. There’s also the two word summary of weapon-focused, and a longer phrase of, “Oh crap the Illuminate have flying enemies now.”

Yes, this new patch brings some new Illuminate foes to the table, including the flying Stingray jet fighter that can lay down strafing runs on players and the Crescent Overseer that is capable of hitting targets even if they’re behind cover (which is not crescent fresh). These enemies herald the start of a new Illuminate-focused objective as the squiddy enemies are now pouring out of the Meridian singularity and are charging straight to Super Earth.

Of course this does mean that players are going to need firepower, and while this patch doesn’t bring new weapons to the game, it does bring a weapon customization feature for “the bulk” of primary weapons that will let players apply attachments like sights, barrels, and clips to modify weapon behavior as well as weapon skins to bling out their favorite death-dealing tools. Slots for customization are unlocked by gaining weapon levels, which are earned by completing levels with chosen weapons.

Speaking of weapons, there’s a new balance patch deployed as well that does things like change spread, drag, sway, and stamina use depending on the type of gun being used; modify shrapnel effects to include a full 360 degrees; scale burning effects better to larger enemies; and apply a series of specific tweaks to several guns and stratagems.

Finally of note for the patch are adjustments to the in-game store, which now will let players pick and choose any item that they want instead of waiting for stock to rotate on a regular basis. Players will also be handed several vehicle skins from previously released Warbond battle passes for free on May 15th, which is also when the new Masters of Ceremony Warbond will launch featuring new armors and new melee weapons like a sword and a flagpole spear.
