Whether server merges are a welcome relief or a moment of pause to an MMO fanbase depends on a bunch of factors, like big the playerbase is, how many merges have already happened, and whether it’s the result of too many servers for a launch. All of those will likely be relevant for this news, as Amazon has announced yet another round of server merges for New World.
Since Aeternum launched last fall, the studio has already gone through two rounds of merges – one in November and one in February. This will be the third merge, though it’s a relatively small one, merging Draco into Aries on the EU side and Rosa into Hudsonland on the US East side. In fact, all four of these servers were involved in the February merges and represent a total of 14 servers between them. It’s been a lot of moving for these folks, in other words.
“In our ongoing effort to enhance your gaming experience, we’ll be merging several game worlds,” the team writes. “We’ll continue to monitor population trends and adapt as needed.”
Beginning April 29th, players on Draco and Rosa will be entitled to transfer elsewhere before being ported to their new default home world. It’s not clear whether free transfer tokens will be dispatched for that.
By our count, we’ll have 28 servers remaining. While we have no clarity on how well the console version of New World Aeternum is performing, we can see that the Steam version’s playercount has fallen from its post-Aeternum peak of 61K to 10K (20K average to 6K average) – which is still twice as many people as were playing regularly last summer during the drought.
